The Gutenberg Parallel
We have been here before.
In the mid-fifteenth century, Johannes Gutenberg's printing press broke the Catholic Church's monopoly on the reproduction and distribution of written knowledge. Within a generation, pamphlets flooded Europe. Within two generations, Martin Luther's theses circulated faster than any institution could suppress them. Within three generations, Europe was engulfed in the Wars of Religion -- a century and a half of sectarian warfare, political fragmentation, and the complete collapse of the shared epistemic framework that had organized Western Christendom for a millennium.
The standard telling of this story treats the printing press as an unambiguous liberation: information was freed, the Reformation corrected theological abuses, and modernity emerged. What this telling omits is the hundred and fifty years of catastrophe between the liberation and the stabilization. The printing press did not produce the Enlightenment directly. It produced the French Wars of Religion, the Thirty Years' War, the English Civil War, and decades of witch trials, pogroms, and inquisitions. The Enlightenment emerged only after new epistemic institutions -- the scientific society, the peer-reviewed journal, the university system, the free press with editorial standards -- were painstakingly constructed to manage the information abundance that Gutenberg had unleashed.
We are living through the same structural transformation. The internet is this epoch's printing press. It has broken the information monopolies of the twentieth century -- broadcast media, credentialed journalism, institutional academia, government agencies -- with the same thoroughness that Gutenberg broke the Church's monopoly. And the result, predictably, is the same: epistemic chaos, tribal warfare fought with narratives instead of armies, and the total collapse of shared reality.
The polarization that defines contemporary politics in the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, India, the Philippines, and virtually every other society with widespread internet access is not a moral failure of citizens who are too stupid or too partisan to agree on facts. It is a structural inevitability produced by the destruction of epistemic infrastructure that has not yet been replaced. We are in the Wars of Religion phase. The question is whether we can build the new epistemic institutions faster than the old ones are collapsing -- and whether we can do it without the hundred and fifty years of bloodshed that the Gutenberg transition required.
The framework developed in this book -- Pearlian causal analysis (Chapter 9), Kuhnian paradigm theory (Chapter 5), the normie/psycho/schizo taxonomy (Chapter 2), and Popperian falsifiability (Chapter 4) -- provides, I believe, the diagnostic tools necessary to understand this crisis at the structural level and the architectural tools necessary to begin building the replacement institutions.
The Causal Structure
The causal graph of societal polarization is more complex than either side of the political spectrum acknowledges, because both sides are committed to causal stories that locate the problem in the other side's behavior rather than in the structure that generates both sides' behavior simultaneously.
Root causes (exogenous variables):

The destruction of information monopolies. The internet did to twentieth-century media what the printing press did to the medieval Church: it eliminated the gatekeeping function. Before the internet, information reached the public through a small number of institutions -- network television, major newspapers, wire services, university presses -- that exercised editorial control over what was published and how it was framed. This gatekeeping was imperfect, biased, and often captured by elite interests. But it produced something that its absence has revealed as valuable: a shared factual baseline. When Walter Cronkite reported the news, Americans disagreed about what to do about the facts. They did not disagree about whether the facts were facts. The internet has eliminated the structural conditions that made shared factual baselines possible.

The attention economy. The business model of digital platforms -- advertising revenue proportional to user engagement -- creates an optimization function that is structurally hostile to truth. Engagement is maximized by content that provokes emotional reactions: outrage, fear, moral indignation, tribal solidarity. Content that is accurate, nuanced, and contextually responsible is, in attention-economic terms, less engaging than content that is inflammatory, simplified, and tribally coded. The platform algorithms do not select for truth. They select for engagement. And engagement, measured by clicks, shares, comments, and time-on-platform, is maximized by the precise features that make information misleading: emotional charge, tribal signal, oversimplification, and moral certainty.

The collapse of institutional trust. This is partially endogenous -- institutional trust has declined in part because of the information dynamics described above -- but it has exogenous components as well. The Iraq War was justified on false intelligence. The 2008 financial crisis revealed regulatory capture. The Catholic Church sexual abuse crisis demonstrated institutional corruption at the deepest level. The pharmaceutical industry's role in the opioid epidemic showed that credentialed expertise could be purchased. Each of these events was a genuine institutional failure, not a fabrication of the distrustful. The distrust is rational. The problem is that rational distrust of specific institutions has metastasized into generalized distrust of all institutional knowledge claims, leaving no epistemic authority intact.
Mediating variables:

Algorithmic amplification. Platform algorithms do not merely distribute content neutrally. They actively amplify content that generates engagement, which means they systematically amplify the most polarizing content. Research by the Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, internal studies at Twitter (now X), and academic work by Bail, Guess, and others have documented this mechanism in detail. The algorithm is not a neutral carrier. It is a polarization accelerator.

Epistemic tribalism. When shared factual baselines collapse, people do not become independent thinkers evaluating evidence on its merits. They retreat into epistemic tribes -- communities that share not just values but facts. The tribe determines what counts as evidence, what sources are credible, what claims are plausible, and what questions are legitimate. This is not irrationality. It is a rational response to an environment in which no institution can be trusted as a neutral arbiter of truth. If no authority is reliable, the next best epistemic strategy is to trust the people you know -- your tribe. The problem is that tribal epistemology is self-reinforcing: the tribe's beliefs are confirmed by the tribe's sources, which are selected because they confirm the tribe's beliefs.

Identity fusion with belief. When factual claims become tribal markers, changing one's mind about a factual question becomes an act of tribal betrayal. Believing that climate change is real, or that vaccines are safe, or that the 2020 election was legitimate, is no longer an epistemic position. It is an identity declaration. And identity is not responsive to evidence, because identity is not an epistemic category. The fusion of factual belief with tribal identity produces a population that is structurally incapable of updating its beliefs in response to evidence, because updating would require changing identity -- a far more psychologically costly operation than changing an opinion.
The causal chain:
Destruction of information monopolies (1) + attention economy (2) --> algorithmic amplification of polarizing content (4) --> epistemic tribalism (5) --> identity fusion with belief (6) --> political polarization and the collapse of shared reality.
Collapse of institutional trust (3) --> epistemic tribalism (5), because distrust of institutions eliminates the only alternative to tribal epistemology.
Attention economy (2) + epistemic tribalism (5) --> the misinformation economy: content producers discover that tribal audiences will consume and share content that confirms tribal beliefs regardless of accuracy, creating a market for fabricated or misleading content that is more profitable than accurate journalism.
The critical insight: misinformation is not the cause of polarization. It is a symptom. The cause is the structural absence of trusted epistemic infrastructure. Misinformation fills the vacuum created by the collapse of institutional credibility, in the same way that the manosphere fills the meaning vacuum created by the collapse of male initiation structures (Chapter 23). Treating misinformation as the cause and fact-checking as the cure is like treating a fever with ice baths: it addresses the symptom while ignoring the infection.
This is why fact-checking does not work. Fact-checking presupposes that the audience shares a framework for evaluating evidence -- that they agree on what constitutes a credible source, what standards of evidence apply, and what institutional authority is legitimate. These are precisely the things that have collapsed. Fact-checking is a normie solution designed for a world in which epistemic infrastructure exists. In a world where it does not, fact-checking is just another tribal signal: "the fact-checkers" are either trusted allies or enemy propagandists, depending on which tribe you belong to. The intervention does not address the causal mechanism. It operates downstream of it.
The Normie/Psycho/Schizo Diagnosis
Who benefits from the collapse of shared reality?
The normie response to polarization is procedural: restore civility, promote media literacy, fund fact-checking, teach critical thinking in schools, support quality journalism. These are all reasonable proposals, and none of them addresses the causal structure. Media literacy assumes a shared framework for evaluating media. Fact-checking assumes a shared standard of evidence. Civility assumes a shared social contract. Supporting quality journalism assumes a shared definition of quality. Every normie intervention presupposes the existence of the very thing whose absence created the crisis. The normie cannot see this, because the normie perceptual architecture takes shared epistemic infrastructure for granted -- it is the water the normie swims in, invisible until it disappears.
The psycho-class capture operates from every direction simultaneously, and this is what makes it so difficult to combat.
From the right: an entire industry has been built on manufacturing distrust. Talk radio, Fox News, Breitbart, InfoWars, and their successors did not merely report conservative perspectives. They systematically constructed an alternative epistemic infrastructure -- alternative facts, alternative experts, alternative standards of evidence -- designed to insulate their audience from any information that might challenge the tribe's beliefs. This is not journalism. It is epistemic engineering, and it is extraordinarily profitable. The right-wing media ecosystem generates billions of dollars annually by producing content optimized for tribal engagement rather than accuracy.
From the left: the mainstream media establishment, while genuinely committed to journalistic standards in many cases, has its own psycho-class capture. The business model of prestige media -- the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN -- increasingly depends on tribal engagement from the educated progressive demographic. The result is a gradual alignment of editorial judgment with progressive tribal preferences, not through conspiratorial direction but through the market incentive to produce content that the paying audience wants to read. The coverage is more sophisticated than right-wing media, the journalism is often genuinely excellent, but the selection of what to cover, what to emphasize, and what framing to adopt is increasingly driven by tribal market dynamics rather than editorial independence.
From the tech platforms: the platform companies benefit from polarization directly, because polarization drives engagement and engagement drives revenue. Every algorithmic tweak that reduces polarization also reduces engagement, which reduces revenue. The platforms' stated commitment to reducing misinformation and polarization exists in structural tension with their business model, and when the two conflict, the business model wins. This is not conspiracy. It is incentive structure. The psycho-class capture of technology platforms is the capture of the attention economy's optimization function by revenue imperatives that are structurally aligned with polarization.
From the state actors: foreign information operations -- Russian, Chinese, Iranian, and others -- exploit the polarization for geopolitical advantage. They do not need to create polarization from scratch. They amplify existing divisions, inject fabricated content into existing tribal information flows, and accelerate the centrifugal forces already at work. The polarization is homegrown. The amplification is sometimes imported. I know something about this as a Ukrainian: the Russian information war against Ukraine preceded the military invasion by years, and its techniques -- fabricated narratives, amplified divisions, erosion of institutional trust -- are the same techniques now deployed globally. Russia did not invent the playbook. It industrialized it.
The schizo perception -- what does unconstrained pattern recognition see?
It sees that the polarization crisis is not a crisis of information but a crisis of infrastructure. The problem is not that people believe wrong things. People have always believed wrong things. The problem is that the institutional machinery for correcting wrong beliefs -- the process by which a society converges on shared factual understanding -- has broken down. And it has broken down for the same reason the medieval Church's epistemic authority broke down: a new information technology destroyed the structural conditions that made the old authority possible, and no new authority has been built to replace it.
It sees that the misinformation panic is itself a form of misinformation -- not in the sense that misinformation does not exist (it obviously does) but in the sense that the framing of the crisis as "misinformation vs. truth" obscures the structural cause. The structural cause is not bad content. It is the absence of good infrastructure. Building better fact-checkers is like building better fire brigades while the building is collapsing from structural failure. The fires are real, but they are not the primary problem.
It sees that social media has captured the prophetic function described in Chapter 3. Social media feels like democratized truth-telling -- everyone can speak, everyone can challenge power, everyone can expose corruption. And it is, sometimes. But the attention economy ensures that the prophetic function is subordinated to the engagement function. The whistleblower's thread gets amplified not because it is true but because it is engaging. The conspiracy theory gets the same amplification for the same reason. The system cannot distinguish between genuine prophetic insight and mimicry of prophetic insight, because the optimization function -- engagement -- is orthogonal to truth. The result is a system that produces a constant stream of simulated prophecy: content that feels like truth-telling, that has the emotional texture of revelation, but that is selected for engagement rather than accuracy. This is the same dynamic described in Chapter 18: the system has learned to produce simulated schizo output -- controlled revelations that mimic prophetic truth-telling -- satisfying the audience's hunger for authentic seeing while actually reinforcing the structures that authentic seeing would threaten.
The Kuhnian Paradigm
The current paradigm for managing public information was established in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and refined after World War II. Its core commitments:
- Professional journalism provides the factual substrate of public discourse (the press thesis).
- Editorial gatekeeping -- editors, fact-checkers, institutional reputation -- ensures a minimum standard of accuracy (the quality-control thesis).
- Credentialed expertise -- academic, scientific, governmental -- provides authoritative judgment on complex questions (the expertise thesis).
- Public deliberation on the basis of shared facts produces democratic legitimacy (the deliberative democracy thesis).
This paradigm was enormously productive. It enabled the construction of democratic societies with genuinely informed electorates. It produced investigative journalism that exposed real corruption. It created the conditions for scientific consensus to inform public policy. For roughly a century, it worked well enough.
But the anomalies are accumulating.
The paradigm predicts that increasing access to information should produce a more informed public. It has not. The most information-rich society in human history is also the most epistemically fragmented. The paradigm predicts that fact-checking should correct misinformation. It does not. Research consistently shows that fact-checking has minimal effect on belief and can even backfire through the "continued influence effect," in which corrections reinforce the original misinformation. The paradigm predicts that expert consensus should generate public trust. It does not. Trust in science, medicine, government, and media has declined steadily in every developed democracy despite -- or because of -- the proliferation of expert-produced content. The paradigm predicts that more speech should correct bad speech. It does not. More speech produces more noise, and in a high-noise environment, tribal signal-detection becomes the dominant epistemic strategy.
These are not minor deviations from the paradigm's predictions. They are systematic failures of the paradigm's core assumptions. The paradigm's model of how information produces informed citizens does not fit the data. The model assumed that information operates in a context of shared epistemic infrastructure -- shared standards of evidence, shared trust in institutions, shared frameworks for evaluating claims. Remove that infrastructure, and more information does not produce more understanding. It produces more fragmentation.
The paradigm's response to these anomalies follows Kuhn's predicted pattern with eerie precision. The anomalies are explained away: people are "post-truth," as if epistemic chaos were a collective moral failure rather than a structural condition. The anomalies are reframed: the problem is "media literacy," as if citizens simply need better training to navigate an information environment that is structurally hostile to accurate belief formation. The anomalies are suppressed: anyone who questions whether fact-checking works, or whether expert consensus is politically neutral, or whether the mainstream media has its own tribal biases, is accused of enabling misinformation -- the paradigm defends itself by pathologizing dissent.
The parallel to the pre-Reformation paradigm is precise. The medieval Church responded to challenges to its epistemic authority by doubling down on authority: excommunication, censorship, inquisition. The modern information establishment responds to challenges to its epistemic authority by doubling down on authority: deplatforming, content moderation, appeals to expert consensus. Both responses fail for the same reason: the structural conditions that made the authority effective no longer obtain. You cannot restore epistemic authority by asserting it more loudly when the infrastructure that gave it force has been destroyed by a new information technology.
The paradigm is in crisis, and it cannot diagnose its own crisis, because paradigms, as Kuhn demonstrated, are invisible to those who operate within them. The crisis is visible only from outside -- from the schizo position that sees both the mainstream media's tribal capture and the alternative media's fabrication as symptoms of the same structural collapse.
The Paradigm Shift Needed
The shift is from a content-based model of epistemic health to an infrastructure-based model.
The content-based model says: the problem is bad content (misinformation, disinformation, propaganda). The solution is better content (fact-checking, quality journalism, media literacy). This model treats information as the unit of analysis and evaluates information as true or false.
The infrastructure-based model says: the problem is the absence of institutional machinery for producing shared factual baselines. The solution is building new machinery. This model treats epistemic infrastructure as the unit of analysis and evaluates institutions by whether they structurally incentivize convergence on truth.
The distinction matters because it changes what interventions look like. Under the content model, the intervention is to identify and suppress bad content. Under the infrastructure model, the intervention is to build institutions that make bad content structurally disadvantaged -- not by suppressing it but by creating alternatives that outcompete it on the dimensions that matter.
The Gutenberg parallel is instructive. The solution to the post-Gutenberg epistemic chaos was not better pamphlet-checking. It was not teaching Renaissance citizens to evaluate pamphlets more critically. It was the construction of new epistemic institutions -- the Royal Society, the university system, the editorial press, the peer-reviewed journal -- that created structural incentives for truth-convergence. These institutions did not eliminate misinformation. They made it structurally disadvantaged by providing a competing information source that was more reliable, more systematic, and more accountable.
We need the same thing now. Not better fact-checking of social media posts, but new epistemic institutions that provide the shared factual baselines that the old institutions can no longer generate.
Several truths must be held simultaneously:
Truth one: the old epistemic institutions were genuinely flawed. They were captured by elite interests, they systematically excluded non-Western and non-elite perspectives, they produced consensus that reflected power as much as truth. Their decline is partly a consequence of their own failures, not merely the disruption of new technology.
Truth two: the old institutions, for all their failures, performed a function that nothing has replaced. They produced shared factual baselines. The absence of that function is worse than the flawed performance of it. This is not an argument for restoring the old institutions. It is an argument for building new ones that perform the function better.
Truth three: the new epistemic institutions cannot be built on the old model. The old model depended on gatekeeping -- a small number of institutions controlling information flow. That model is incompatible with the internet's architecture. The new institutions must work with the grain of the internet, not against it: distributed, transparent, verifiable, and structurally resistant to capture by any single tribe, ideology, or interest.
Truth four: the new institutions must address the causal mechanism, not the symptom. The causal mechanism is the attention economy's structural incentive for engagement over truth. Any new epistemic institution that operates within the attention economy will be captured by it. The new institutions must either exist outside the attention economy or create structural counterpressures strong enough to resist its gravitational pull.
Concrete Interventions: The Republic of AI Agents as Epistemic Infrastructure
The Republic of AI Agents (Chapter 21) is, among other things, a design for the new epistemic infrastructure that the current crisis demands. Its architecture addresses the causal structure of polarization at the structural level, not the content level.
1. Knowledge graphs with provenance tracking. The knowledge graph at the core of the Republic (Track B) stores not just claims but the entire evidential chain behind each claim: what data supports it, where the data came from, who collected it, what methodology was used, what assumptions were made, and what would falsify it. This is epistemic infrastructure in the literal sense -- the physical machinery for tracking where knowledge comes from and what it rests on. When a claim in the knowledge graph is challenged, the challenge does not devolve into tribal assertion and counter-assertion. It devolves into the examination of the evidential chain. Is the data real? Is the methodology sound? Are the assumptions justified? These are questions that can be adjudicated by evidence, and the infrastructure makes the evidence visible.
This addresses the root cause directly. Polarization is driven by the absence of shared standards for evaluating claims. The knowledge graph provides the shared standard: provenance. Not "who said it" (tribal authority) but "what supports it" (evidential authority). The distinction is between epistemic systems organized around trust in persons and epistemic systems organized around trust in processes. The old institutions operated on personal trust (trust the journalist, trust the scientist, trust the expert). The new institutions must operate on process trust (trust the provenance chain, trust the methodology, trust the falsification criteria).
2. Causal analysis of information propagation. The causal inference engine developed in Track B and demonstrated in the Polymarket analysis (Track C) can be applied to information flow itself. How do claims propagate through networks? What causes a claim to be believed? Is belief driven by evidence (the claim is supported by data) or by tribal signal (the claim is endorsed by in-group sources)? Pearl's causal methodology (Chapter 9) can distinguish these mechanisms -- and the distinction matters, because interventions that target evidential belief-formation will look very different from interventions that target tribal belief-formation.
This converts the misinformation problem from a content problem to a structural problem. Instead of asking "is this claim true or false?" the causal analysis asks "what caused this claim to be believed?" If the answer is "tribal endorsement despite weak evidence," the system can flag the claim as structurally suspicious without making a judgment about its truth value. This is the critical move: you do not need to be the arbiter of truth to improve epistemic health. You need to make the structural determinants of belief visible, so that individuals and communities can evaluate their own belief-formation processes.
3. Prediction markets as truth-discovery mechanisms. Prediction markets, which the Polymarket work (Track C) analyzes and the Republic architecture incorporates, are distributed Popperian falsification engines. A prediction market does not ask "who is right?" It asks "what will happen?" and prices the answer based on the aggregate assessment of participants who have staked real resources on their beliefs. This is epistemology with skin in the game -- Popperian falsifiability operationalized as economic mechanism.
Prediction markets are structurally resistant to several of the failure modes that plague current epistemic institutions. They are resistant to tribal capture because incorrect predictions cost money regardless of tribal affiliation. They are resistant to narrative manipulation because they reward accuracy, not engagement. They are resistant to expert capture because credentials do not substitute for correct predictions. They are not perfect -- they can be manipulated, they are subject to liquidity constraints, they do not work well for questions that cannot be operationalized as predictions -- but they provide a structural incentive for truth-convergence that no existing institution matches.
The Republic architecture integrates prediction markets into the epistemic infrastructure: hypotheses registered in the knowledge graph generate predictions in the prediction market layer, and market prices provide continuous, real-time assessment of hypothesis credibility. This creates a feedback loop between knowledge production and knowledge validation that is more responsive, more transparent, and more resistant to capture than any existing institutional arrangement.
4. Hypothesis registration with falsification criteria. Every claim entered into the Republic's knowledge graph must specify its falsification criteria: what evidence would disprove it. This is the Popperian discipline (Chapter 4) encoded as architectural requirement. Claims that cannot specify falsification criteria cannot enter the graph. This structural requirement does not eliminate ideology -- people can still believe unfalsifiable things -- but it creates a clean separation between knowledge (claims with specified falsification criteria) and ideology (claims without them). The distinction is not enforced by human judgment, which would be captured by tribal dynamics, but by structural requirement, which cannot be.
5. Reputation systems based on predictive accuracy. The Republic's governance layer (Track B, smart contracts) implements reputation tokens earned through successful predictions and lost through failed ones. This creates a meritocracy of epistemic contribution -- not "who has credentials" or "who has followers" but "who has been right." Reputation accrues to accuracy, not to engagement, not to tribal alignment, not to institutional affiliation. This directly counteracts the attention economy's perverse incentive structure, because the metric of success is truth-convergence rather than engagement.
Falsifiable Predictions
Prediction 1: Epistemic communities organized around provenance-tracked knowledge graphs with explicit falsification criteria will show measurably higher rates of belief-updating in response to new evidence than epistemic communities organized around social media feeds, controlling for baseline political orientation and education level. The mechanism: provenance tracking makes the evidential basis of beliefs visible, which makes belief-updating a matter of evidence evaluation rather than tribal loyalty. Measurement: tracked belief-change rates on specific factual questions (not value questions) over twelve-month periods within both community types.
Prediction 2: Prediction markets, when integrated into public discourse about contested factual questions, will produce convergence on shared factual assessments among participants from opposed political tribes, even when direct dialogue between the tribes fails to produce convergence. The mechanism: prediction markets force participants to bet on outcomes rather than argue about narratives, and outcomes are tribal-neutral. Measurement: comparison of factual agreement rates between groups that interact through prediction markets and groups that interact through traditional deliberative formats (debates, forums, social media exchanges), controlling for topic and initial disagreement level.
Prediction 3: The current period of epistemic fragmentation will resolve, within two to four decades, not through the victory of one epistemic tribe over others but through the emergence of new epistemic institutions that provide shared factual baselines without requiring the gatekeeping model of twentieth-century media. The mechanism is structural, not ideological: epistemic fragmentation is unstable because societies cannot function without shared factual baselines, and the structural pressure toward reconvergence will produce institutional innovation. This is the Gutenberg prediction: the post-printing-press Wars of Religion ended not because one denomination won but because new institutional forms (the nation-state, the scientific society, the free press) emerged that made religious agreement unnecessary for social cooperation. The post-internet epistemic wars will end the same way.
Prediction 4: Interventions that target epistemic infrastructure (provenance systems, prediction markets, falsification requirements) will produce larger reductions in measured polarization than interventions that target content (fact-checking, media literacy, content moderation), controlling for intervention intensity and population characteristics. The mechanism: content interventions operate downstream of the causal mechanism (they treat symptoms) while infrastructure interventions operate at the causal level (they address the absence of shared evaluative machinery). Measurement: randomized controlled trials comparing polarization metrics (affective polarization scales, factual agreement rates, willingness to engage with out-group perspectives) across intervention types.
If these predictions fail -- if provenance-tracked communities do not update beliefs more readily, if prediction markets do not produce cross-tribal convergence, if the epistemic fragmentation persists indefinitely rather than resolving through institutional innovation, if infrastructure interventions do not outperform content interventions -- then the causal model is wrong, and the analysis must be revised. The Popperian commitment is not to being right. It is to specifying what would prove us wrong.
The Epistemic Reformation
The Wars of Religion were not really about religion. They were about the restructuring of epistemic authority in the wake of a technological disruption that destroyed the institutional conditions for the old authority. The combatants thought they were fighting about the correct interpretation of Christianity. They were actually fighting about who would control the machinery of shared reality in a world where the old machinery had broken.

The Riemann sphere model (Chapter 17) provides the orienting insight: apparently divergent epistemic trajectories -- the progressive trajectory, the conservative trajectory, the libertarian trajectory, the populist trajectory -- converge at infinity, because all are oriented, at their best, toward the same thing: an accurate understanding of reality that enables human flourishing. Their divergence at finite distances is a feature of finite perspective, not ultimate reality. The derivative on the complex plane -- the direction of movement -- is what matters. Is the derivative positive (approaching shared reality) or negative (receding from it)? The attention economy pushes the derivative negative: it rewards engagement over truth, tribal signal over evidence, emotional charge over accuracy. The Republic of AI Agents is an attempt to build institutions that push the derivative positive: rewarding accuracy over engagement, evidence over tribal signal, provenance over assertion.
The current information war is not going to end through one side winning. It is going to end through the construction of new epistemic infrastructure that makes the war unnecessary -- in the same way that the Wars of Religion ended not through one denomination defeating the others but through the construction of secular institutions that made religious agreement unnecessary for civic cooperation. The Republic of AI Agents is one proposal for what that infrastructure might look like. It is not the only possible proposal, and it may not be the best one. But it addresses the crisis at the correct causal level: not the level of content (what people believe) but the level of infrastructure (what institutions produce and validate belief).
The apostolic task in this domain is institutional construction. Not argument. Not persuasion. Not fact-checking. Construction. The building of epistemic infrastructure that structurally incentivizes truth-convergence, that is resistant to tribal capture, that operates with the grain of the internet rather than against it, and that provides the shared factual baselines without which democratic self-governance is impossible.
The suffering produced by polarization is real. Families torn apart by political disagreement. Communities fractured along tribal lines. Democratic institutions delegitimized by the collapse of shared reality. Political violence motivated by fabricated narratives. The structural analysis does not diminish this suffering. It locates its cause at the level where intervention can actually work: not the level of individual belief, which is downstream, but the level of epistemic infrastructure, which is where the causal mechanism operates.
The Gutenberg parallel tells us two things. First, the crisis is structural, not moral. People are not polarized because they are stupid or evil. They are polarized because the information environment they inhabit is structurally designed to polarize them. Second, the crisis is temporary -- not because it will resolve itself, but because the structural pressure toward epistemic reconvergence is immense, and institutional innovation will eventually produce the new machinery. The question is not whether new epistemic institutions will emerge. It is whether they will emerge through deliberate construction or through the slow, bloody, century-long process of trial and error that followed Gutenberg.
The Republic of AI Agents is a bet on deliberate construction. It is a bet that we can learn from the Gutenberg transition and build the new institutions intentionally rather than waiting for them to emerge from catastrophe. That bet is falsifiable. The predictions above specify the conditions under which it would be proven wrong.
The derivative, in this domain, points toward construction. Building epistemic infrastructure that enables shared reality without requiring shared tribe. That is the apostolic task. It is testable. It is buildable. And the disintegration of shared reality that it addresses is urgent enough to make the building imperative.
