  2. Reality. The point at infinity is a genuine element of C^\hat{\mathbb{C}}, not a convenient fiction. It has a well-defined topology, functions can be evaluated at it, and removing it changes the mathematical properties of the space. God is real in the same sense -- removing the point at infinity from the Riemann sphere produces a qualitatively different (non-compact) space.

  3. Qualitative difference. The point at infinity is not a complex number. It does not have coordinates. It does not participate in arithmetic. It is qualitatively different from every finite point while being a genuine element of the same space. God is qualitatively different from every finite being while being genuinely part of the same reality.

The Derivative and Free Will

Falsifiability criterion: The theology is falsifiable not by whether humanity reaches \infty (no finite trajectory arrives at infinity) but by whether the derivative is positive -- whether the direction of movement approaches or recedes from the attractor. The resurrection reveals the singularity as removable -- the function is actually well-defined at the point, the trajectory continues smoothly, and the apparent discontinuity was an artifact of insufficient perspective.

This is not metaphor. The mathematical structure captures the theological claim precisely: from within the paradigm (the finite plane), the crucifixion looks like a fatal discontinuity. From the perspective of the Riemann sphere (the higher-dimensional view), the function is smooth through the point. The resurrection is the paradigm shift that reveals the smoothness.

Poles and Genuine Evil

Not all singularities are removable. A pole of order nn at z0z_0 is a singularity where f(z)c/(zz0)nf(z) \approx c/(z - z_0)^n near z0z_0 -- the function genuinely diverges, and no redefinition can make it continuous.

Theological mapping (Chapter 18): Poles represent genuine structural evil -- not apparent discontinuities that resolve from a higher perspective, but real points where the trajectory diverges from infinity rather than approaching it. The Epstein network, the Antichrist structure, the psycho-class capture of liberating institutions -- these are poles, not removable singularities. They represent genuine damage to the trajectory that cannot be resolved by merely shifting perspective.

The distinction between removable singularities and poles is the mathematical formalization of the distinction between suffering-that-serves-the-trajectory (the crucifixion, the paradigm crisis) and evil-that-damages-the-trajectory (structural predation, institutional capture). Both look like discontinuities from within. Only one is genuinely discontinuous.

The derivative/free-will mapping carries formal weight (it specifies a testable relationship between structure and choice). The singularity/crucifixion mapping may be primarily illustrative. Distinguishing these requires further formal development.

  2. Does strong emergence exist? The information-theoretic formalization above specifies conditions for strong emergence, but whether those conditions are satisfied by consciousness remains empirically open. If consciousness is weakly emergent (fully reducible to neural activity), the theological claim that God is a strongly emergent property of consciousness loses its foundation.

  3. Is the free energy principle a theory of everything or a useful framework? Friston's framework is mathematically powerful but its empirical status is debated. If it turns out to be unfalsifiable (a framework that accommodates any outcome) rather than falsifiable (a theory that makes specific predictions), then the theological applications built on it inherit the same weakness.

  4. Can Godelian self-reference ground free will? The Hofstadter argument is suggestive but not conclusive. Godel's theorem applies to formal systems, and whether the brain is usefully modeled as a formal system in the relevant sense is contested. The argument's strength lies in its formal structure; its weakness lies in the gap between formal systems and physical brains.

These limitations are not fatal to the theology. They are the points at which the theology is most vulnerable to falsification -- which is, by the Popperian criterion of Chapter 4, where its integrity is strongest. A theology that acknowledges where it might be wrong is more trustworthy than one that claims certainty everywhere.
